Koshering the kitchen

At last night’s meeting with the Rabbi, he posed the question to me and Chavi if I have a kosher kitchen. She does mainly vegetarian in her dorm room, so to her its not a big deal. I however live on meat, so I could never live without meat in the house.
I do currently have 2 sets of dishes, 2 sets of silverware, 2 sets of pots and pans and everything, but no, it is not kosher. For the most part (with a few exceptions) I have stuck to only buying products which are labeled as kosher. I do still have some of these products in the house though.

Additionally I have purchased a number of “extras” in regards to utensils that have never been used before. In order to make life easiest, most things I have bought are Blue and Red for the meat and dairy and was thinking about making other colors (green if possible) as parve. Additionally we recently purchased from the shul a couple sets of “Kosher Keepers.” Those are 3 different sized containers all of which say Parve, Meat or Dairy on them, with the color coated lids.
The Rabbi mentioned that Passover is coming up so we need to Kasher the kitchen anyway. If we take my current set of dishes, we could kosher everything completely, it would now be safe to use for Pesach. Then after Pesach I could just continue using them as my regular dishes and look into new dishes for next Pesach.

After leaving the meeting I gave a call to a friend of mine from college. He is someone who is very well known in the local Orthodox community, and is definitely a trusted member. Chavi and I had previously discussed he would be a perfect person to help us, if he did than we knew for sure everything would be done correctly. He of course was more than willing to help us out.

This is definitely a huge step, and I am really looking forward to it!

Best of luck to you! Be prepared to make mistakes, it happens to everyone going kosher, and enjoy the ride . . .

Thanks TMC, I look forward to everything that will happen to enable me to update!

Mottel, I am hopeful that the slip ups will be minimal. Thankfully unlike most people in my position I grew up in a kosher house. My mom has always kept kosher, although my father's house was not. I definitely know that no one is perfect, but I hope that this will at least give me a little bit of an advantage, if any.

I'm glad that I have a tiny kitchen at school :P It'll be a fun process, tho! Hopefully ... and someday? It'll be all up to me (the lady of the house) to really enforce.

what does 'Koshering' actually mean? Yes, I'm not a jew.

Anon: To make something kosher i.e. fit for cooking food permitted by the bible for Jewish consumption.

The labeled containers are a great idea. Where can I get Kosherkeepers?
