Koshering part 2 - The exploding Pyrex days

These past few days have definitely been a very long process to kasher my kitchen. I now fully understand why people have 2 sets of everything for Pesach instead of just koshering what they have. There is way too much involved and way too much time spent in kashering everything. This has been much more of an undertaking than I imagined it being.

Saturday night Motzie Shabbat, Chavi and I did the majority of the kashering. We spent a good three hours between everything we did. We went through every single thing we had in the kitchen and koshered what we were able to. More stuff got added to the pile of stuff that could not be, and next week that car load will be going to Goodwill.

Additionally Sunday morning I started taking more and more stuff out to the stream in my backyard in order to Tovel. Within no time I learned the prayer by heart. All of my silverware, and glasses have been fully koshered and toveled now. Thankfully so much of the stuff that I have bought recently has not been used, so it just involves more trips out back in order to tovel them.

Last night when I got home I started working on koshering the dishwasher. After everything is toveled I obviously want to wash it before using it, so I needed to ensure my dishwasher is parve. I have been running stuff through it in shifts in hopes of getting everything done prior to leaving for Pesach.

Additionally I had my first issue when toveling everything last night. Per my Rav in order to kasher a Pyrex dish you turn the oven on to 550ยบ and bake them empty for 1 hour. When it was done, I took the dish out and put it on to the stove top to cool and it instantly exploded everywhere. Apparently Pyrex can go from freezer to oven, but if it’s hot and touches a cold surface it will explode. I found this out by calling Pyrex today, and they are mailing me a new dish, free of charge.

Due to the exploding Pyrex setting me back about 1 hour last night (15 minutes for the shards to cool, 45 to pick them all up), I did not have a chance to finish koshering everything. Tonight Chavi and I will need to finish cleaning out the cabinets, koshering the rest of the stuff, doing the fridge/freezer and so on, in order to ensure that when we get back everything is ready and able to be used for Pesach.

This process was a lot harder and took a lot longer than I would have expected. Everyone please make sure to remind me next year NOT to kosher stuff for Pesach, just go out and buy new stuff, THANKS!

You think toveling in a stream is fun . . . we're going to the Dnieper River here in Ukraine to Tovel soon . . .
And exploding Pyrex. Who'd 'ave thought?
